An Institutional Makerspace within a Science Centre
Located within experimenta — one of Germany's largest science centres — Experimenta Makerspace combines professional infrastructure with an open workshop culture. Supported by the Dieter Schwarz Foundation, it benefits from long-term financial stability while remaining accessible to a broad public.
With around 600 members, it has become a regional hub for hands-on experimentation and collaborative projects.
The makerspace includes woodworking and metal workshops, electronics labs, textile stations, 3D printing facilities, and a recording studio. This range enables projects that connect traditional craft, digital fabrication, and media production.
Access is structured: all new members complete safety training before using the equipment independently. The framework ensures safe operation while keeping entry barriers manageable.
Recognised as an extracurricular educational institution, Experimenta Makerspace complements formal education through practice-based learning. Staff members provide technical guidance, while peer exchange plays an important role in daily activity.
The focus lies on experimentation and skill development rather than commercial production.
Responsible material use and repair are integrated into everyday practice. Members are encouraged to reuse resources, rethink production processes, and approach making with long-term awareness.
Sustainability is embedded in operational routines rather than framed as a separate programme.
Closely connected to educational institutions and regional initiatives, the makerspace operates at the intersection of science communication and informal learning. Its hybrid model shows how institutional support can provide stability while maintaining openness.
Within the Fabmaker context, it represents an example of a structurally anchored, professionally equipped makerspace model.
